Focusing on Peace rather than Conflict
Welcome to the Paññāsāstra Institute for Peace, a dynamic center dedicated to practice-based education and fostering a vibrant community of scholars and practitioners committed to advancing peace studies and peacebuilding. Our institute is centered on empowering youth and cultivating their understanding and engagement in creating a more harmonious world. By providing practical education on peacebuilding and nurturing a network of individuals passionate about peace at various levels, from local to regional, we strive to catalyze positive change in societies globally.
At the Paññāsāstra Institute for Peace, we recognize the pressing need for effective approaches to address conflicts and promote peaceful coexistence. Through our innovative programs, we equip young individuals with the knowledge, skills, and experiences necessary to actively participate in peacebuilding initiatives. Our educational framework emphasizes hands-on learning, encouraging students to translate theory into action, enabling them to become agents of positive transformation in their communities and beyond.
The Paññāsāstra University Institute for Peace (PIP) is an integral component of the Faculty of Social Science and International Relations, dedicated to bolstering both theoretical understanding and practical applications within the university’s academic framework. PIP synergizes with the Faculty’s curriculum by providing specialized modules, seminars, and workshops focused on peace studies, conflict resolution, and diplomacy. These offerings supplement the existing academic structure, enriching students’ understanding of global dynamics and equipping them with practical tools to navigate complex international issues.
In collaboration with a diverse community of scholars, practitioners, and organizations, we foster an environment that encourages interdisciplinary dialogue, research, and collaboration. By connecting individuals from various backgrounds and expertise, we aim to generate holistic insights and innovative strategies for sustainable peacebuilding. Together, we can forge a path towards a more peaceful and inclusive world.
Multilateral Peace Keeping Theory and Practice
The research conducted by PIP on UN peacekeeping delves into the critical examination and analysis of the United Nations’ peacekeeping operations. With a focus on enhancing effectiveness and efficiency, our scholars and experts explore diverse dimensions of peacekeeping, including operational strategies, conflict resolution mechanisms, humanitarian interventions, and the role of technology. By dissecting past experiences and evaluating current challenges, we aim to provide evidence-based recommendations and innovative solutions that empower the UN and its member states to strengthen peacekeeping efforts, protect civilians, and foster sustainable peace in volatile regions around the globe.
Locally-Led Peacebuilding
Paññāsāstra University’s peace and conflict studies program recognizes and foster locally-led peacebuilding by adopting a community-centric approach that prioritizes engagement with local stakeholders. This can be achieved through partnerships with grassroots organizations, community leaders, and practitioners who are actively involved in peacebuilding efforts. The program seeks to incorporate fieldwork and experiential learning opportunities, allowing students to immerse themselves in local contexts and learn from the wisdom and experiences of community members. Additionally, the curriculum emphasizes human security and development dimensions, cultural sensitivity, and participatory methodologies, and cross-national civil society and academic engagement to empower, local voices and amplify their role in shaping peacebuilding strategies. By actively involving and respecting the agency of local communities, the university’s peace and conflict studies program facilitates the emergence and sustainability of locally-led peacebuilding initiatives.
R2p – Atrocity prevention and Protection
The PUC PIP has joined the International Coalition for the Responsibility to Protect (ICRtoP) to enhance its teachings in support of peace and conflict resolution. This partnership offers several benefits, including access to a global network of experts and practitioners in the field, enabling the institute to stay updated with cutting-edge research, best practices, and emerging trends in the realm of the Responsibility to Protect (R2P). Collaborative initiatives such as research-based publications, workshops, and conferences can be organized, providing students and faculty with invaluable opportunities to engage directly with R2P advocates and contribute to the advancement of the principle. This partnership can enrich the university’s teachings by infusing real-world experiences and perspectives, fostering a deeper understanding of conflict prevention, human rights protection, and the imperative of international cooperation in promoting peace and justice globally.
